Lab Staff
Joel Loveland - Director206.616.6566
As the Director of the Integrated Design Lab, in collaboration with the Department of Architecture at the University of Washington, Joel has delivered the daylighting consulting on over 150 projects per year across the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana as well as the province of British Columbia.
Professor Loveland continues to travel widely, consulting on projects throughout the lab’s territory as well as lecturing and teaching nation-wide. In this effort, he is revisiting the major cities of the region to report on the lab’s recent daylighting work, renewing acquaintances made at Daylighting Consultant Seminars and looking for the best way to expand and support the “Daylighting Network” of professionals throughout the Pacific Northwest.
Christopher Meek, AIA - Daylighting Specialist206.616.7014
Christopher Meek is a Research Assistant Professor of Architecture at the University of Washington and a registered architect in the State of Washington. He serves as the primary daylighting consultant at the Integrated Design Lab (IDL). In this role, he consults with design teams in the Pacific Northwest and nationally with a focus on the integration of daylight with architectural form and electric lighting. He teaches courses on light, design, and architecture at the University of Washington, Department of Architecture.
Heather Burpee - Health Design Specialist206.616.0568
Heather Burpee is a Research Assistant Professor and Health Design Specialist at the Integrated Design Lab. She consults leading health design firms in the Puget Sound Region on best practices for high quality, energy efficient design for hospitals. As part of her consultation, she has established thorough research on energy efficiency of hospitals, working with leading architects and mechanical engineers to establish goals to radically reduce energy consumption in this building typology. She has traveled extensively in Northern Europe studying innovative hospital design and its applicability to design practice in the US.
Robert B. Peña - Building Performance Consultant206.543.7274
Rob Peña is an Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture at the University of Washington. He teaches architectural design and environmental control systems courses, with an emphasis on ecological design and high-performance buildings. Rob’s work with the IDL involves design consulting and analysis of high performance buildings, as well methods for measuring and analyzing building performance. Rob is the former director of Ecological Design Consulting for Van der Ryn Architects and the Ecological Design Institute in Sausalito, California.
Aaron Helmers - Research Associate
Aaron is a Research Associate at the Integrated Design Lab. His work at the IDL includes research and development of strategies for reducing energy use in existing high-rise buildings, and supporting the lab’s hospital energy efficiency research. He has also helped teach comprehensive design studios with a focus on sustainable schools and health clinics. While completing his Master of Architecture degree from the University of Washington, he worked at the IDL on electric lighting, daylighting, and energy benchmarking projects.
Linnea Kretz - Office Manager206.616.7966
Linnea is the IDL’s Program Support Supervisor. She coordinates all of the lab’s logistics, and manages to do it with a sense of humor (most of the time). She is your first point of contact for any general lab inquiries. Prior to coming to the IDL, Linnea studied at the University of Washington, where she earned a BS in Business Administration. In her free time she loves to get away from the city, especially into the Cascades.
Graduate Assistants
Aaron Allan
Aaron is a student in the 2-year Master of Architecture program. He grew up in the Blue Ridge mountains in Asheville, NC and received his undergraduate degree in Architecture from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC in 2004. Since then, Aaron has worked for 2 small architecture firms in both Asheville and Ann Arbor, MI. He has been honing his gardening and rock climbing skills, and is also a lover of music, a trombone player and also enjoys hiking, soccer, disc golf, craft beer and foraging, especially during berry season!
Jess Blanch
Jess is a student in the 3-year Master of Architecture program. She holds a B.A. from Dartmouth College in Environmental Earth Sciences and Human Development & Education. Prior to embarking on her Masters, Jess spent three years working for Environmental Works Community Design Center, where her experiences solidified her commitment to creating healthy and beautiful places for underserved populations. At the Integrated Design Lab, Jess is a Research Assistant working with energy efficiency in hospitals.
Amanda Bruot
Amanda is a student in the Master of Science in Design Computing program. She holds a B.S. in Design from The Ohio State University, and has previously worked as a furniture designer. At the Integrated Design Lab, Amanda can mainly be found working on parametric lighting simulations. Her academic interests include parametric and generative design, performative architecture, and digital fabrication.
Michael Gilbride
Michael is a student in the 3-year Master of Architecture program. He enjoys the variety of projects and tasks at the lab and is currently working on building performance simulation and maintaining the lab website. In addition to the MArch degree, he is pursuing a Certificate in International Development Management and Policy and is interested in examining the role of architecture in social change. Michael graduated from Reed College focusing on Spanish Literature and Political Science.
Jaclyn Merlet
Jaclyn is a student in the 3-year Master of Architecture program. She previously earned a BA in Architecture from Smith College and before returning to school, worked at a structural engineering firm in Cambridge, MA. In her studies, Jaclyn is interested in how the interaction with natural and existing contexts can enhance the creation of space and develop healthier buildings. In her free time she loves to bake and as an East coast transplant, explore the Seattle area.
Chris Pineo
Chris grew up in the landscapes of eastern Washington and the greater West where he developed a deep love for the environment and the natural world. Summers of working on projects around his family’s house near Cheney Washington led to time spent in both commercial and residential construction. He now brings this love for both the natural and built environments to his work at the IDL and the 2-year Master of Architecture program at the University of Washington. Although Chris loves architecture you will often find him backpacking, fishing, and climbing the occasional tree.
Adam Stoeckle
Adam is a student in the 3-year Master of Architecture program. Originally from Pittsburgh, PA he received his undergraduate degree in architecture from the University of Cincinnati. The year before starting graduate school he worked for Habitat for Humanity of East King County as an AmeriCorps volunteer. Adam is most interested in the way light (among other things) affects the manner in which people experience space. He loves the Steelers, hiking, fountain coke, Mighty-O, etc.
