Our schools face the challenge of improving student performance while working with finite available resources. Integrated building design can be a tool in meeting this challenge, during both new school design and building renovation. Daylighting and views in classrooms have been shown to improve student learning. Additionally, building energy-efficient schools means that money saved on utility bills can be spent on other educational resources for our children.
Washington State has set comprehensive standards for school building performance through the Washington Sustainable Schools Protocol (WSSP). The IDL was involved with the creation of these guidelines, and is committed to seeing them result in schools that are beautiful and sustainable places.
The Integrated Design Lab has provided lighting and integrated systems consulting on over 100 education projects, from pre-K to post-secondary, public and private. To find out more about integrated design in education follow the links below, or contact Christopher Meek, AIA.
