The Integrated Design Lab has worked with AIA Seattle to produce a 10-session series of workshops covering the material described in 50 to 50 called the AIA+2030 Professional Series. IDL Staff, practicing professionals, and researchers in the field lead the sessions. Case studies from the Pacific Northwest are presented, illustrating the adaptation of specific energy-saving strategies to our climate. Now in its 3rd year, AIA Seattle has developed this into a national program that is being offered by AIA offices around the country.

Professional Certificate: Integrated Lighting Design (UW Extension)

A Certificate in Integrated Lighting is offered by University of Washington Extension to serve practicing professionals and non-matriculating students. Geared toward practicing architects, engineers, lighting designers and specifiers, this program provides advanced and foundational knowledge in principles linking light, human comfort and advanced building design strategies in order to create the healthiest, most productive and energy-efficient interior environments. It provides participants with the skills in design and computational analysis that will create a toolkit of best practices that you can be immediately applied to practice.

As a participant, you will acquire the conceptual and technical skills to lead projects in lighting design, daylighting and computational analysis with a focus on human comfort, energy performance and sustainability. You will benefit from the multi-disciplinary contributions of classmates, instructors and guest speakers. Upon completion, you will earn graduate credit (9 credits).

Lighting Certificate (UW M. Arch. Program)

The Lighting Certificate program offered through the Department of Architecture provides a comprehensive education in the principles and practice of integrated light in architecture through daylighting, electric lighting, and computational lighting analysis. This program is offered to students completing a Masters of Architecture degree and as a post-professional certificate. Work study and Research Assistant opportunities provided through the lab offer graduate level architecture students the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of daylighting in buildings and provide them with the real world experience of working for a client in a professional setting.

Integration of Climate and the Design Process with Chris Chatto

This course will focus on the practice of climate analysis for the purposes of designing more sustainable buildings and cities that respond to local site and weather conditions to reduce their use of energy use while optimizing occupant comfort.

Energy Modeling with Mike Hatten

This course is built around the relationship between designing for radically high levels of energy efficiency and the needed energy performance modeling required to guide and test the results of those decisions. Performance Modeling is taught in two modules of five classes each. Module One is a primer on energy modeling with DOE2/Equest, and is intended for students who have little or no experience with energy modeling. Module Two is an applications-focused series using the BetterBricks document, Integrating Energy Engineering and Performance Modeling into the Design Process.
